The SubGenius Chess Tournament of 1957 was the first official chess tournament of the Church of the SubGenius. And possibly the only official chess tournament of the Church of the SubGenius. It was played on December 4, 1957.

All of the 23 charter members of the Church of the SubGenius participated. While not all of their names are known, and some that are known are kept secret, they included:

It was planned to be held as a "round-robin 'tournament"1 where every player played a game with every other player. But not necessarily a chess game.2

However, because there were 23 players, and chess requires two players per game, "Bob" was given a pass on the first game round. And on the second. And on the third. And all the rest of the game rounds--until the final one.

Once all players but Constance "Connie" Marsh were eliminated, it was time for "Bob" to play.

Final Game[]

The final chess game was played between Constance "Connie" Marsh and J.R. "Bob" Dobbs. The result is pictured.

Notes[]

1 The term round-robin is derived from the Malaysian term ruban, meaning "Robert". Over a long period of time, the term was corrupted and idiomized to robin.

2 Other games played were Pee Tag aka Piss Tag, Pin The Tail on the Honky, and The Cloved Lemon Kissing Game.
