SubGenius Wikia Clench
Forums: Index > Dobbstalk > Who Should Administer this Website

This has come up in discussion many times. Who should administer this website?

In large corporations, even highly successful CEOs need little knowledge of what happens on the employee level. You may have seen that in action on Undercover Boss.

But this is not a big corporation; it's a small website. So there are three primary factors

  1. Familiarity with the Church of the SubGenius
  2. Familiarity with Wikia
  3. Willingness and ability to follow the requirements of Wikia
  1. For an administrator, this factor is actually the least important here. Why? Because this is primarily important for those who edit here whether or not they are administrators. Administrators have a few editing tools other uses don't have, but often write less. This is especially true on a large wiki or one hit with spammers, argumentative editors whether named or IPs, and vandals, precisely because some and even much of their time is spent using those tools instead of writing. There are many editors here who are quite familiar with the Church of the SubGenius. In addition, the Church allows and even encourages "original research".
  2. This is significant. While the wikia-related errors of editors can be corrected, it sometimes requires or at least facilitates fixing errors if an administrator can make those corrections. To do so, the administrator needs to know Wikia and be willing to consult with other experienced Wikians when they run into something with which they are not familiar.
  3. This is critical. If the requirements are not followed, Staff can remove content, remove any and all editor rights from any editor, and even, in extreme cases, remove a website. All of these have happened on Wikia, and the first two have happened here.

This is from Tips for being a great admin by Wikia staff member Brandon Rhea:

Admins should serve the community
This idea is an ideal scenario, and it’s one that may not be the most practical if you have a very small group of users working on a wiki, but this is the goal you should shoot for.

This is what I, as an admin, want here. I also want this, from the same article:

Admins should be friendly guides
We’ve established now that admins shouldn’t be rulers, and that decision-making should be something done by the entire community of users. You may be asking, though, if admins aren’t there to make a decision, what can admins really do except push buttons?
With this understanding, admins will often be speaking directly to users, sometimes to give out warnings or to block users. Before an admin ever gets to that point, though, it’s a good idea to remain helpful and to try and guide users, even one on one, to an understanding of the community-decided rules.

So who should admin this website? In my opinion, all admins should be willing and have the ability to follow the requirements of Wikia which includes being highly familiar with Wikia, and be familiar with the Church of the SubGenius. I'll post some more personal comments below. You can add your own. Pope Hilde (talk) 19:34, October 8, 2015 (UTC)

COMMENT. I'm getting more personal here and am posting as an editor, not as an admin. In my personal opinion, there is only one editor here who clearly demonstrates and can easily prove all three of these requirements: The Overmind. But The Overmind's status as administrator was removed by Wikia staff, possibly by The Overmind's request, but also for inactivity; as Wikia staff stated, that's common if not universal practice during the adoption of a website. If The Overmind returns, I would support and welcome his re-elevation to administrator here.

Barring that, we have a number of editors here who know and have long been a part of the Church of the SubGenius but who do not seem to be familiar with Wikia and/or are not willing and able to follow Wikia's requirements. We also have editors who are familiar with Wikia and are willing and able to follow Wikia requirements, but have not proven to the community their understanding of the Church of the SubGenius.

As you may have read on my user page, my sother gave me membership in the Church of the SubGenius years ago. I took the Church's apparent promotion of extreme violence, abandoning employment, and irresponsible sexual activity literally. Perhaps you can understand why that would not appeal to a woman who then was largely dependent upon that man. Lately I got Eris, and then got "Bob" and Connie. But I can't prove that except by what I write here. Ultimately, none of you can prove it by any other way either. Pope Hilde (talk) 19:56, October 8, 2015 (UTC)

COMMENT I know I shouldn't post when I'm upset and I've done that. I'm trying not to.

But we do have users who have years of Wikia experience and SubGenii experience. You have both, and JoX the Boptist definitely does along with The Overmind. I've newer to the SubGenius, but got the three main SubGenius books and am reading them, and of course we got our sources. ;) Miley Spears Discordian American Princess to the Stars (let's talk) 04:42, October 9, 2015 (UTC)

I agree about the experience, especially with JoX and The Overmind. The issue posters here seem to have is with known names. If JoX chose to use his/her known SubGenius identity, then JoX would more likely be accepted as an old timer. JoX has chosen not to, which is his/her valid choice. Lumping General Public in with a Bobbie-come-lately who jumps on anyone else's passing train is insulting to poor ol' absent Overmind. Jzp-wikia (talk) 13:42, October 11, 2015 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't understand your comment. If you're referring specifically to this website, then yes, no one has as much experience here as The Overmind. Pope Hilde (talk) 14:04, October 11, 2015 (UTC)
