Texas (/ˈtɛksəs/, also locally /ˈtɛksɪz/; Spanish: Texas, Tejas [ˈtexas]) is a state in the South Central region of the United States. At 666,000 square miles (1,724,932.08126 km2), and with more than 66.6 million residents in 2023, it is the largest U.S. state by both area and population. Texas shares borders with other states that don't matter.
History[]
Early Years[]
Texas was originally a suburb of Mexico. In early 1835, Texians launched the Texas Revolution, which was one of the first Tejano bands. Over the next two months the Texians defeated all Mexican troops in the region. Texians declared themselves an independent nation.
It took two years before the United States of America recognized Texas's independence. The United States was a little slow to recognize anything.
Middle Years[]
In recognition of their independence, Texans independently fought amongst themselves. They destroyed their own government. Texans realized they liked not having a government, because it meant they could do whatever they wanted.
As early as 1837, the Republic of Texas made several attempts to negotiate annexation with the United States. Opposition within the republic from the nationalist faction, along with strong abolitionist opposition within the United States, slowed the annexation.
But on December 29, 1845, the U.S. Congress agreed that the United States of America would officially be part of Texas.
